4 ideas for decoupage on furniture

The meaning of decoupage is 'the art or craft of decorating objects with paper cut-outs'. You can literally decoupage with anything! I have 4 examples of different types of decoupage that you can apply to furniture in this blog to create some fabulous and unique pieces.

If you are looking to purchase any Dixie Belle Paint products then using my direct link earns me a small commission but won't cost you a penny more. It helps me create more free content for you like this blog.

Project one is an example of paper napkin decoupage. This is probably the most inexpensive method of decoupage. I'm always on the look out for pretty napkins!

Products used:
Floral paper napkins

There are a couple of down sides of using napkins though! They are small in size which makes them more tricky to apply on a large surface. They are also very thin which means you need a light hand as they are susceptible to ripping. You also have to be careful using copyright images if you plan to sell your furniture with napkin decoupage on.

Example number 2 is probably my favourite type of paper to decoupage with.

Products used:

This is rice decoupage paper. This is a thin paper which comes in hundreds of different designs and sizes which has been especially produced for furniture decoupage. It is very easy to apply and because larger sizes are available, it is sometimes more suitable for larger pieces of furniture. It's also tougher than paper napkins which means its much less likely to rip or tear.

Example 3 is wallpaper!

Products used:

Yes! This is wallpaper! It's a paintable wallpaper with a raised pattern. This is a thick paper which makes it perfect for covering up any damaged areas. This piece had some pretty big pieces of veneer missing, cracks and general imperfections. I was able to repair the worst of the damage with filler then apply this wallpaper over the top which not only covers those areas of damage, but gives texture, movement and a touch of unique flair to furniture projects. I have linked the design I used above but it is available in many other patterns.

Project 4 isn't technically furniture.

Products used:

This is also rice decoupage paper but I couldn't resist sharing this piece I rescued from a bargain bin at Hobbycraft. I adore the detail on this paper with the vintage style insects and botanical drawings. If you're new to decoupage, working on a smaller piece like this is always a good starting point.
